The admitted colours of the Lagotto range from white to brown, in all its tonalities. Absolutely forbidden is the colour black, in the coat and/or mucous membranes (truffle -nose-, fingertips, lip).
The breed standard states. “Off-white single-colour, white with brown or orange markings, orange roan, brown roan, brown single-colour (in different shades) with or without white, orange with or without white. Some dogs have a brown to dark brown mask. Fuchsias (in different shades) are allowed.”

Coat management, also known as grooming, is essential for the Lagotto. The owner of a Lagotto must take time to achieve a beautiful, curly, felt-free coat of the right length. 

BRUSHING: Lagotto should be brushed every 1-2 weeks. It does not have to be brushed daily as the curl would not form. Recommended brushes are the carder or comb with metal teeth. 

WASHING: The Lagotto can be washed when dirty but it would be advisable to wash it every 30-45 days, using a shampoo suitable for curly hair and combining it with a conditioner to facilitate the untangling of knots.

CUTTING: The Lagotto’s coat can be cut manually with scissors or using a machine. Every 4-6 weeks, depending on the rate of hair regrowth, the coat should be shortened to a length suitable for home management. While 1-2 times a year, the coat should be shortened to 7-10 mm.

I colori ammessi del Lagotto vanno dal bianco al marrone, in tutte le sue tonalità. Assolutamente vietato il colore nero, nel mantello e/o mucose (tartufo -naso-, polpastrelli, labbro).
Lo standard di razza cita. “Monocolore bianco sporco, bianco con macchie marroni o arancio, roano arancione, roano marrone, marrone monocolore (in diverse tonalità) con o senza bianco, arancio con o senza bianco. Alcuni cani hanno una maschera da marrone a marrone scuro. Le focature (nelle diverse tonalità) sono permesse”

La gestione del pelo, detta anche grooming, è fondamentale per il Lagotto. Il proprietario di un Lagotto deve dedicarci del tempo per ottenere un bel mantello, riccio, senza infeltrimenti e della lunghezza giusta. 

SPAZZOLARLO: il Lagotto va spazzolato ogni 1-2 settimane. Non dev’essere spazzolato quotidianamente perché non si formerebbe il riccio. Le spazzole consigliate sono il cardatore o il pettine con denti di metallo. 

BAGNO: il Lagotto può esser lavato quando è sporco ma sarebbe opportuno lavarlo ogni 30-45 giorni, utilizzando uno shampoo idoneo per pelo riccio e associandolo ad un balsamo per facilitare il districamento dei nodi. 

TAGLIO: il pelo del Lagotto può esser tagliato manualmente con le forbici oppure utilizzando una macchinetta. Ogni 4-6 settimane, a seconda della velocità di ricrescita del pelo, il mantello andrebbe accorciato ad una lunghezza idonea alla gestione casalinga. Mentre 1-2 volte l’anno, il pelo andrebbe accorciato a 7-10mm.
